The greatest annual gains were seen in agriculture, transport and logistics, and energy and mining. Rebounds were seen in Houston, where hiring rose 20.3% in August from a year ago when Hurricane Harvey hit. The retail industry’s death may have been exaggerated — with reports of outright shortages of retail workers in cities such as New York, San Francisco and Seattle. Here’s what people are saying.
