At the recent National Training Conferences, National President Tony Reardon discussed with me and other chapter leaders his intention to create a shared vision for our union that would put us on a path to be even stronger 10 years from now than we are today. NTEU is seeking information about what our leaders, members, and bargaining unit employees value and look for from our union, which is critical to the creation of that shared vision.
For that reason, today NTEU is launching The Shared Vision Project, a comprehensive research study that will examine what our members, leaders, and prospective members want and need from our union. This project will help to provide NTEU with data and insight into the views, needs, and perceptions of our members, stewards, officers, chapter presidents, and bargaining unit employees. It will assist NTEU in taking a fresh look at the needs and challenges across our agencies and provide NTEU with data that will further enable NTEU to ensure Union resources are being deployed appropriately and to develop strategies to engage our members, enhance Union communications and services, and continue NTEU’s great legacy of serving the federal workforce.
For this project to effectively contribute to our efforts to create a shared vision, NTEU will need every leader and member to participate. Each one of us may be contacted by telephone, e-mail, or mail. Some of us will be asked to participate in focus groups. All of us will have the option to easily opt out of the study if so wished.
NTEU is working with an independent consultant, Whorton Marketing & Research of Silver Spring, MD, to manage the project and analyze the data. This will also ensure the confidentiality of the responses. All responses are confidential and every precaution will be taken to secure our members’ information.
Here are the details:
- The telephone version of the survey will begin in early August. A random sample of employees will be called at home or cellphones.
- An online version will be launched shortly thereafter. Before the online survey is distributed, all employees for whom NTEU has e-mail addresses will receive an e-mail asking them to participate, reminding them to be sure their home e-mail information is current and giving them the opt out option.
- Our Chapter will receive a number of hard copies of the survey with envelopes to distribute to nonmembers. The envelope will include a postage paid envelope to return the survey. NTEU will provide me with a list of randomly-selected nonmembers who should receive the survey.
I encourage you to participate in this survey.
